How Much Party Tableware Do You Actually Need? (UK Party Planning Guide)

Planning a party and staring at a "pack of 100" wondering if that's too many โ€” or nowhere near enough? You're not alone. Working out how many plates, cups and cutlery sets to buy is one of the most common party-planning headaches. This simple guide gives you the rule-of-thumb numbers so you can shop once and relax.

The golden rule: plan per guest, then add a buffer

A reliable starting point is to count your confirmed guests and add 15โ€“20%. People drop plates, grab a fresh cup instead of reusing theirs, and a few extra guests almost always turn up. Running out mid-party is far more stressful than having a few left over (especially when leftovers store easily for next time).

Plates: how many per person?

How many plates each guest uses depends on the format of your event:

  • Buffet or finger food: 2โ€“3 plates per guest. People go back for seconds and grab a clean plate each time.
  • Sit-down meal (one course): 1.5 plates per guest.
  • Meal plus dessert: 2โ€“3 plates per guest (a dinner plate and a smaller dessert plate).

So for a 30-guest buffet, you're looking at roughly 60โ€“90 plates. A pack of 100 is spot on. Browse sizes and packs in our Disposable & Party Tableware range, or go greener with compostable bagasse and paper plates.

Cutlery: don't forget you need three pieces

Remember that "cutlery" usually means a fork, knife and spoon per place setting โ€” so one guest can use three pieces in a single sitting. For a meal, budget 1.5 sets per guest; for finger food you may only need forks.

Our reusable and disposable cutlery sets come in bulk packs of up to 300 pieces, which covers a 60โ€“90 person event comfortably.

Cups: the most underestimated item

Cups are where most hosts run short, because guests rarely keep the same cup all night. Plan for 2โ€“3 cups per guest for a 2โ€“3 hour party, and more if you're serving multiple drink types (water, soft drinks, something warm).

For a 30-guest party, aim for around 75โ€“90 cups.

Napkins, foil and the extras

  • Napkins: 2โ€“3 per guest โ€” they're cheap, so over-buy slightly.
  • Foil trays and cling film: essential for prepping ahead and packing up leftovers. Our foil containers and catering trays come in every size.
  • Bin bags: one thing everyone forgets until the end of the night. Grab a pack of heavy-duty refuse sacks so clean-up takes minutes.
